Job Duties:
Job requires tending to a cow-calf and seedstock beef cattle operation. Livestock duties include feeding and watering cattle; mixing and distributing rations based on nutritional requirements; lifting and handling heavy bags of minerals and supplements; moving hay bales manually or with equipment; and adjusting rations as needed based on health or seasonal conditions. Workers assist with all aspects of calving cows and bred heifers, including monitoring for signs of labor, providing support during delivery, ensuring proper postnatal care, and occasionally lifting and carrying newborn calves to safe or designated areas for treatment and care; tagging, weighing, and processing calves; and weaning calves from cows, managing the separation process and monitoring calf health and behavior during the transition. Workers move, sort, and handle cattle on foot and with equipment using low-stress handling practices; relocate cattle between pastures under rotational grazing practices and monitor access to water and forage; haul water to livestock and routinely check water sources; assist with breeding-season activities, including heat detection, artificial insemination, and management of cows and bulls through the breeding season; and condition, feed, sort, weigh, fit, and haul bulls in preparation for the operation's annual production bull sale, including preparing sale facilities and assisting with sale-day logistics. Workers monitor livestock health daily, identify and promptly address signs of illness or injury, administer medications, vaccinations, and supplements, brand and doctor cattle, and assist during veterinary visits by gathering, restraining, and recording health information. Workers perform fencing duties, including installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing permanent and temporary fencing, setting and moving electric fencing, and maintaining gates and related livestock containment systems; apply fly and external-parasite treatments to cattle, especially during warm months; and clean and maintain barns, pens, and handling areas, manage bedding and manure, and ensure a clean, safe environment for animals. Workers operate and maintain various equipment including, but not limited to, tractors, front loaders, skid steers, mowers, balers, feeding machinery, and trucks with goose-neck cattle trailers connected. In a supporting role, workers operate tractors and farm equipment to till soil, plant, fertilize, spray, cultivate, and harvest the operation's reduced wheat acreage and to put up hay, including mowing, raking, and baling; and perform post-harvest field work following the custom harvest of the operation's corn by others, including residue management, field cleanup, and ground preparation. During the winter months, when equipment is removed from field operation, workers winterize, inspect, maintain, and repair farm equipment and vehicles, including draining fluids, disconnecting batteries, lubricating moving parts, sealing openings to prevent rodent infestation, applying protective coatings against corrosion, performing post- and pre-season inspections, replacing worn or defective parts, and preparing equipment for storage and for the next season. During periods of snow accumulation, workers operate snow-removal equipment to clear snow from feedlots, driveways, access roads, and equipment paths and apply sand or salt to maintain safe conditions around livestock and work areas so that feeding and daily operations are not disrupted. Workers also perform general maintenance, repairs, and clean-up of storage sheds, buildings, fences, gates, barns, and all farm equipment; ensure operational areas are organized and well maintained; and use hand tools and equipment to repair, clean, and service farm vehicles, machinery, and agricultural equipment.
