Job Duties:

Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. Shovel, haul, spread manure, & dig holes, ditches, & trenches. Irrigation maintenance. Remove debris from fields using hoes, shovels, baskets, etc. Manually plant, cultivate, harvest, count, load, unload, and pack vegetables, produce, horticultural specialties & field crops (cucumbers, eggplant, & squash). Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, & knives, & any other farm equipment related to planting cultivating, & harvesting vegetables, watermelons, squash, tomato, cucumbers, eggplant, and oranges. Workers may repair fences and existing farm buildings and participate in irrigation activities. Duties may include tilling soil, applying fertilizers, transplanting, pulling weeds, raking, cleaning around shed area, thinning/pruning crops, applying pesticides, cleaning, grading, & packing harvested product. Citrus – Following the supervisors instructions, the worker will place a picking sack over their shoulder and carry an 18’ to 22’ ladder from the field truck to the area of the grove to be harvested. The picking sack is a canvas bag equipped with a shoulder strap for support, an opening for the insertion of fruit, and an opening to remove fruit. A fully loaded sack weighs between 80 and 100 lbs., depending on size, condition, and variety. Worker positions ladder against the tree and within reach of the fruit in a leaning position, taking care not to break limbs, damage the tree, knock off fruit, or interfere with other workers in a secure position to prevent slipping or falling and possible injury to themselves or other workers. Worker will remove fruit from the tree and place into pick sack. When picking sack is full, take full sack to fruit container located in the grove and drop fruit from pick sack into container. To perform this kind of work, the worker must be physically able to harvest citrus, fill his assigned sacks, and transport it to the packing house. The employee must be able to climb ladders with extra weight of the sack Workers may assist in trimming, irrigation, fertilizing, or maintenance of the citrus trees. Packing takes place in the fields and in a packing house that is owned by Shelby Farms. Blueberries: Workers may receive a hooked belt and carry 2-1 gallon picking buckets as they move down assigned rows picking all ripe berries placing them in the bucket. Workers harvesting blueberries will be paid by the piece rate of $0.67 per pound or $4.00 a gallon bucket. In order to meet to production standards listed in this application for this specific group activity, a worker will harvest an average of either 20.90 lbs or 3.50 1gallon buckets per hour. Each worker must pick the plants clean of all ripe fruit. When buckets are filled, the worker will take to the supervisor who then will give him a ticket or place bucket on scale to be weighed. At the end of the workday, the workers will give all the tickets they collected throughout the day to the supervisor/manager to count how may gallons, buckets, or pounds they picked all day. Inspect fields irrigation systems, replace damaged pipes, valves, water jets, sprinklers, etc. using necessary equipment. Strawberries: Workers may receive clamshell flats filling them as they move down assigned rows picking all ripe berries placing them in the flat. Workers harvesting strawberries will be paid by the piece rate of $2.00 per 3x3 clamshell flat. In order to meet production standards listed in this application for this specific activity, a worker will harvest an average of 7 3x3 clamshell flats per hour. Each worker must pick the plants clean of all rip berries. When flats are filled, the worker will take to the supervisor who then will give him a ticket or place flat on scale to be weighed.

Special Requirements:

Applicants must be 18 years or older. It is recommended that you have experience with Agricultural Equipment and knowledge of Agricultural Field work due to safety reasons related to possible equipment injury, heat stroke possibility, and food safety. Perform prolonged bending reaching and lifting to 100lbs. All tools, equipment and supplies will be provided at no cost to workers. Work in extreme weather conditions in outdoor agricultural fields and involves exposure to sun, wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, heat, cold and other natural elements. Workers must be able to climb, stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from waist), push, pull, reach, and lift. Workers must be able to withstand working in the direct sunlight and weather conditions ranging from hot and humid weather, moderate rain, and cold while performing their required job duties. Hours and days of work may vary doe to weather conditions.
